So we’ve decided to look for a house this spring, with a tentative move date of no later than July (since that is when our apartment lease is up.) I know we’re a year or two late to the party, since rates have been so great for the last 5 years or so… but life has delayed us until this point, so there’s not much we could have done. Plus we should be able to (still) get a fairly good rate (historically speaking) and housing prices in the Buffalo area are always pretty good, so we should be able to get a lot of house for our money.
Anyway, we’re pretty excited (and nervous) about making this jump. We watch HGTV pretty much every day during the weekend (yeah, I know), but it’s new to us and we’re psyched about the options we’ll have once we actually own a place. So now it comes down to finding the right place for us. Tough proposition, since I know we’re both very picky with aesthetics and functionality. Anyway, here are my ‘Needs’ criteria (not in any specific order):
- At least three bedrooms
- A big kitchen
- At least two bathrooms
- Some semblance of a backyard
- Nice neighborhood, with decent schools
- Good condition
- A location that doesn’t force either of us into a long commute
‘Wants/Likes’ criteria would be:
- Hardwood floors
- A deck
- Close to the necessities, like grocery store, shops, etc.
- A garage
- A fun, cool neighborhood with lots of things in walking distance (shops, a park, etc.)
- A fireplace
- Lots of storage
- Good natural light
- A unique space, not cookie cutter
So, with that said I’ll keep the site updated with our search and any options we find. If anyone has any house hunting tips, we’d appreciate any help we can get. Stay tuned!

- I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get my hands on some fucking gourds and arrange them in a horn-shaped basket on my dining room table. That shit is going to look so seasonal. I’m about to head up to the attic right now to find that wicker fucker, dust it off, and jam it with an insanely ornate assortment of shellacked vegetables. When my guests come over it’s gonna be like, BLAMMO! Check out my shellacked decorative vegetables, assholes. Guess what season it is—fucking fall. There’s a nip in the air and my house is full of mutant fucking squash.
