The tech and web development world has been holding their breath the last few months, as Google developed their very secretive checkout system integrated with Google accounts. Today, Google Checkout arrived on our doorsteps, with a handful of merchants ready and willing to be Google’s guinea pigs.
Edmund Scientific, my favorite science store, is part of the initial launch, which was sort of surprising, but none the less exciting. They are also offering a Google Checkout coupon, which will give you $10 off your online order of $20 or more, if you use Google Checkout. Pretty cool! Not sure how long that will last, but make sure to check it out. Edmund has some great science-related gifts and gadgets, as well as fun, educational toys for the kids to use during the summer months.
For developers and merchants, Google has also launched a Developer’s Center and a merchant sign-up. It will be interesting to see how quickly sellers move to this new payment option and what, if any, effect it will have on PayPal, the industry leader. I know PayPal offers many similar options, but I am definitely a fan of giving small mom and pop shops the ability to sell online, without having to spend the big bucks to buy or develop a merchant system. Companies like Google and PayPal make it very easy to do, which will only enhance the online marketplace.
Anyway, the tech world can breath again (at least for a few days), Google Checkout is live! I wonder what Google has up their sleave next… what ever it is, I’m sure we’ll be seeing “leaked” screenshots in the near future on Digg.
