It's true, 'cause I keep repeating it.

September 15th, 2006

Paul “Wolfie” Wolfowitz, former Deputy Secretary of Defense, and one of the chief architects of the Iraq war, must be too busy in his new role as World Bank President to have watched the news over the last few years.

I mean, he’s still spinning the ‘insurgency surprised us’ line, even after the New York Times reported (during ’03, ’04 and ’05) on pre-war assessments from the State Department, CIA, and National Intelligence Council that warned the policy makers of many of the issues plaquing Iraq today.  He had to have seen one of them, right?  (The NYT reports and the assessments?)

I love the ‘ignore the reports and stick to what you’ve been saying all along’ tactic that Cheney and other White House officials have taken recently. It’s like, “maybe if I keep repeating myself and stick to a story, it will actually come true.”  Or maybe they expect people to believe them, because of who they are?  I imagine that kind of power can do that to you. In the age of 15 second sound clips, it is probably pretty easy to get away with that tactic — especially using repetition.

Then you have the other end of the spectrum — the “I never said that” technique (even though you’ve said that multiple times and/or insinuated it a bunch more.)  Case in point.

Just more evidence that once you start bending the truth (and even lies) to fit your (misplaced) agenda, it becomes harder and harder to keep the story straight. Or at least the story that fits with the actual truth.

Maybe they’re eternal optimists, or maybe just downright horrible liars (and people)?

(Editor Note: For those of you who watched the Daily Show this week, I added the question mark to the end of that last statement to allow me to say what every the hell I want! Fox News style, baby. Thanks, Mr. Stewart for all you do.)
