I was listening to KCRW’s “Left, Right, and Center” today and totally agree with the thoughts of a majority of the panelists on the Obama/religion issue. The whole ‘hub bub’ focused around Obama’s former pastor is ridiculous. Focusing on a few sermons from the pastor at this point in the campaign is a desperate grab to bring Obama down. Conservatives have no problem looking to the likes of Jerry Falwell and other right wing, fanatical religious leaders for support, when they spout vile remarks equal to or past Wright’s sermons on a regular basis, do they? Nope. Catholic politicians don’t have to back away or denounce any controversial remarks made by the Pope, do they? Nope. Romney didn’t have to back away from the questionable statements made by current or past Mormon leaders did he? Nope. Or does McCain have to denounce support/backing of evangelical leaders that have a history of insensitive and bigoted remarks? That’s right, nope.
Yeah I don’t agree with everything that I heard Wright say (of course), but the sad thing is, some of it was true. Yeah we don’t want to hear that our government’s actions had a part in bringing about 9/11, but unfortunately it is true. Bin Laden told us that himself many times. Ethnocentrism prevents many of us from seeing that for exactly what it is…
What’s the motive behind this Obama bashing? Race? Possibly, but I’d say it’s more likely out of desperation. Obama, barring some huge gaffe, is heading toward the nomination. I’d say someone is out there trying to manufacture the gaffe, rather than waiting for Obama to make an (unlikely) mistake. But, if you look at the fact that all those religious leaders I mentioned above are white, you gotta think race is playing at least some part in this debate.
Hopefully folks listened to his excellent speech in Philly the other day.
